The strongest privacy coins in 2026 are Monero (XMR), private by default on every transaction, and Zcash (ZEC), private only when you use its shielded pool. Zano and Firo also hide sender, receiver and amount. Dash isn't a privacy coin in the same sense: its CoinJoin mixing is optional and weaker.
Last updated: September 2026
Key Takeaways
- Default privacy beats optional privacy. Every Monero transaction is private. Only about 29% of Zcash supply sits in shielded pools, as of September 25, 2026 (ZecStats).
- Dash's CoinJoin is off by default. Dash's own docs say it is "not recommended for users requiring a high level of privacy" (Dash docs).
- Regulated exchanges keep dropping privacy coins. Kraken halted XMR, DASH and ZEC trading for India-based clients in April 2026 and for UAE-based clients in June 2026.
- The EU rule from July 2027 targets providers, not holders. Regulated crypto platforms can't handle anonymity-enhancing coins. Holding them in your own wallet isn't banned.
- A swap is not a privacy tool by itself. You only get privacy on the XMR leg, or on ZEC after you shield it. The Bitcoin you start with stays traceable.

What Is a Privacy Coin?
A privacy coin is a cryptocurrency whose protocol hides at least one of the three things Bitcoin publishes on every transaction: who sent it, who received it, and how much moved. Bitcoin is pseudonymous, not private. Once an address is linked to a name, through an exchange record or a reused address, its whole history can be read.
Privacy coins close that gap in different ways:
- Decoys (ring signatures) hide which coin was spent.
- One-time addresses (stealth addresses) hide the recipient.
- Encrypted amounts (confidential transactions) hide the value.
- Zero-knowledge proofs hide all three while still proving the transaction is valid.
The dividing line in 2026 is default vs optional. When privacy is optional, most users skip it, and the private minority stands out. The reasons to want privacy are ordinary: keeping your salary and savings out of public view, protection from targeted theft, and fungibility, which means no coin gets "tainted" by its history.

Which Privacy Coins Matter in 2026?
Five coins cover almost every real privacy use case in 2026. Monero and Zano are private by default. Zcash and Firo offer strong cryptography you have to opt into. Dash offers mixing, not encryption.
Demand is back. The privacy sector gained about 213% from Bitcoin's October 6, 2025 peak to September 7, 2026, to roughly $33.6 billion, and ZEC alone made up about 62% of it (CryptoTimes, citing Glassnode data). That is market context, not a forecast.
| Coin | How privacy works | On by default? | Swappable on Godex (Sep 25, 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monero (XMR) | Ring signatures + stealth addresses + RingCT | Yes, always | Yes |
| Zcash (ZEC) | Zero-knowledge proofs (shielded pools) | No, about 29% shielded | Yes (pays to a transparent address; shield it after) |
| Zano (ZANO) | Hides sender, receiver, amount and asset type | Yes | Yes |
| Firo (FIRO) | Lelantus Spark (hides sender, receiver, amount) | Opt-in Spark addresses | Not currently |
| Dash (DASH) | CoinJoin mixing via masternodes | No, off by default | Not currently |
Godex availability comes from Godex's public coin list (api.godex.io), checked September 25, 2026. Coin availability changes, so check the swap page before you send.
Two more columns matter if you're a long-term holder. Supply auditability: on Bitcoin and transparent Zcash, anyone can add up the coins. Monero and Zano instead prove, cryptographically, that no coins were created from nothing. Zcash tracks each shielded pool's total balance, so the supply can still be checked. Exchange access: it is shrinking on regulated venues for all five coins, as the next sections show.
Monero (XMR): Is It Still the Most Private Coin?
Yes. Monero remains the most widely used private-by-default coin in 2026. Every transaction combines three layers:
- Ring signatures mix the real input with 15 decoys, making a ring of 16 (getmonero.org).
- Stealth addresses give each payment a one-time destination.
- RingCT hides the amount while proving that inputs equal outputs.
There is no transparent mode. That makes every XMR interchangeable, and it is the main reason regulated exchanges struggle to list it.
Monero's next big upgrade, FCMP++ (full-chain membership proofs), would replace the 16-member ring with a proof over every output on the chain. It is not live yet. As of the Monero Research Lab meeting on September 9, 2026, it was still on a beta stress-test network, and no upgrade date had been set (Monero Research Lab agenda). Some blogs say it already forked. As of late September 2026, it hasn't.
Monero has no hard cap. After the main emission, a tail emission of about 0.6 XMR per block keeps miners paid. Price context: XMR moved above $600 in early September 2026 (CryptoTimes).

Zcash (ZEC): How Private Is It Really?
Zcash is as private as the pool your coins sit in. Shielded ZEC uses zero-knowledge proofs to hide sender, receiver and amount. Transparent ZEC, at t1… addresses, is as public as Bitcoin. As of September 25, 2026, 4.9 million ZEC (28.9% of supply) was shielded and about 11.98 million was transparent (ZecStats).
2026 has been Zcash's busiest year in a long time:
- July 28: the NU6.3 "Ironwood" upgrade went live. It added a new shielded pool after a flaw was found in the older Orchard circuit. There was no evidence the flaw was exploited (The Block).
- August 25: Grayscale's spot Zcash ETF (ZCSH) began trading (Grayscale release).
- September 4: ZEC crossed $1,000 for the first time (24/7 Wall St.).
- September 22: 21Shares launched a physically backed Zcash ETP in Europe (21Shares release).
The honest catch: an ETF gives you price exposure, not privacy. And most swap services, Godex included, pay ZEC out to a transparent address. Your privacy starts only once you shield the coins in your own wallet. Our step-by-step: how to swap Zcash privately. Technical comparison: Zcash vs Monero.
Is DASH a Privacy Coin?
Not in the way Monero or Zcash is. On its main chain, Dash is a public blockchain with optional mixing. Its privacy feature, CoinJoin (formerly PrivateSend), is disabled by default. When you switch it on, it splits your coins into standard amounts and mixes them with other users' coins through masternodes, over 2 to 16 rounds you choose.
Amounts and addresses stay visible on-chain. Mixing makes the links harder to prove, but it doesn't encrypt anything. Dash's own documentation says CoinJoin is "not recommended for users requiring a high level of privacy." It also notes that chain-analysis firms offer risk scoring for Dash CoinJoin transactions (Dash docs).
One 2026 development changes the picture a little. On August 4, 2026, Dash switched on shielded transactions using Zcash's Orchard design (Halo 2 proofs) on its separate Evolution chain (Dash). That is real encryption, but it lives on Evolution. It isn't on the Core chain that exchanges and most wallets use.
Verdict: Dash is a fast payments coin with optional privacy. Exchanges still group it with privacy coins, though: Kraken's 2026 delistings for India and the UAE included DASH.
What Happened to Zcoin? Firo and Lelantus Spark
Zcoin is now Firo. The rebrand was completed on November 30, 2020 (Firo). The old xzc ticker is gone. The privacy protocol has changed twice since: first Lelantus, then Lelantus Spark. Spark went live around January 18, 2024. It hides the sender, receiver and amount for funds held in Spark addresses (Firo).
2026 tested it. On August 1, Firo received a disclosure about a flaw that could let an attacker forge Spark coins in transactions with multiple inputs. The team limited Spark spends to a single input as a stopgap (Firo). A hard fork at block 1,371,000, around September 4, 2026, restored full Spark functionality (Firo).
The lesson applies to every coin here: zero-knowledge systems can have bugs (Zcash's Orchard and Firo's Spark both did in 2026), and how fast a project discloses and fixes a flaw matters as much as the cryptography itself. Firo isn't currently swappable on Godex.
Other Privacy Coins Worth Knowing in 2026
Zano (ZANO) is the newer private-by-default chain worth a look. It hides the sender, receiver and amount, and even which asset moved. Its "Confidential Assets" let people issue tokens that carry the same privacy (Zano docs). ZANO is swappable on Godex (BTC to ZANO). It is also far smaller and less liquid than XMR or ZEC, and the ecosystem is younger.
Other names on "privacy coin" lists include Beam and Grin, which use the Mimblewimble design, Secret Network, which focuses on private smart contracts, and Railgun, a privacy system for tokens on Ethereum and other chains. None is currently swappable on Godex, and none has Monero's or Zcash's liquidity. "Privacy coin ICO" and "Apollo," both on 2020-era lists, are no longer relevant.
Why Are Exchanges Delisting Privacy Coins?
Regulated exchanges must identify customers and, under the Travel Rule, pass sender and receiver data along with transfers. Coins that hide those details by design make that hard to show to a regulator. So many venues simply stop listing them. Delisting is a compliance decision by the exchange, not a ruling that the coins are illegal to own. For where these coins still trade, see where to trade XMR, ZEC and DASH without KYC.
| Date | Exchange / region | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| Jan 5, 2024 | OKX | Delisted XMR, ZEC, DASH and other privacy pairs (Cointelegraph) |
| Feb 20, 2024 | Binance | Delisted XMR (CoinDesk) |
| Oct 31, 2024 | Kraken, EEA | Halted XMR trading and deposits "due to regulatory changes" (Kraken) |
| Sep 2, 2025 | Kraken, Canada | Disabled XMR trading (Kraken) |
| Apr 10, 2026 | Kraken, India | Halted XMR, DASH, ZEC deposits and trading (Kraken) |
| Jun 16, 2026 | Kraken, UAE | Halted XMR, DASH, ZEC deposits and trading; leftover balances were converted Sep 15–25 (Kraken) |

The EU rule for July 2027. Under Article 79 of the EU Anti-Money Laundering Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2024/1624), banks, financial institutions and crypto-asset service providers may not keep anonymous accounts, or accounts that allow transactions to be anonymized, including through anonymity-enhancing coins. The regulation applies from July 10, 2027. It governs providers. It does not make it illegal for individuals to hold privacy coins in a self-custody wallet. Expect EU-regulated platforms to wind down privacy-coin services before that date.

How to Swap Privacy Coins Without an Account
With a non-custodial instant swap, you don't open an account. You pick a pair, paste your own receiving address, send the deposit, and the coins go straight to your wallet. On Godex the flow is:
- Set up a wallet you control for the coin you want: a Monero wallet for XMR, an Ironwood-ready Zcash wallet for ZEC, or a Zano wallet for ZANO. Back up the recovery phrase offline.
- Open the pair on godex.io, for example BTC to XMR, BTC to ZEC or BTC to ZANO. Check the domain first: godex.io is the only official site (godex.pro is a known scam).
- Choose a fixed or floating rate. A fixed rate holds the quote for 30 minutes while your deposit arrives. That's useful on volatile pairs, and privacy coins have been volatile all year.
- Paste your receiving address. For ZEC, use your wallet's transparent
t1…address. Godex pays out to transparent addresses only. - Send the exact deposit and keep the swap ID. A swap typically completes 5–30 minutes after the deposit is received. Support is available 24/7.
- For ZEC, shield the coins as soon as they arrive. Until you do, they are as public as Bitcoin.
No registration or account is needed to create a swap. Godex does screen transactions for AML risk, and its published AML/KYC policy allows extra verification on transactions it assesses as high-risk.
What a swap does and doesn't do:
- The BTC or USDT you send stays on a public chain. The swap doesn't erase that trail. You only get privacy going forward, on the XMR, ZANO or shielded-ZEC side.
- No account doesn't mean anonymous. Your IP address, wallet habits and the source of your funds can still link back to you.
- No account doesn't mean tax-free. In many countries, a crypto-to-crypto swap is a taxable event.

Which Privacy Coin Should You Choose?
Pick the coin that fits the job, not the one that's trending.
- Choose Monero if… you want privacy on every transaction without having to think about it, and a large, mature network.
- Choose Zcash if… you want zero-knowledge cryptography, a supply anyone can check, and optional transparency, for example to prove a payment to an auditor. You'll need to shield your coins yourself every time.
- Choose Zano if… you want default privacy plus private tokens and stablecoins, and you're comfortable with a smaller market.
- Choose Firo if… you like Spark's design and can get it from a venue that still lists it.
- Choose Dash if… what you need is fast payments. Treat its privacy as a light layer, not a shield.
Whatever you choose, keep the coins in a wallet you control; privacy you hand to a custodian isn't privacy (non-custodial exchanges explained). XMR, ZEC and ZANO can be swapped on Godex straight into that wallet, with no account.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which cryptocurrency is most anonymous?
Monero is the most widely used coin that is private by default. Every transaction hides the sender, receiver and amount, and there is no transparent mode. Shielded Zcash offers stronger cryptography in theory, but only about 29% of ZEC is shielded, so its anonymity set is smaller. No coin protects you from off-chain leaks such as a KYC record, your IP address or reused addresses.
Which is the safest cryptocurrency?
No coin is "safe" as an investment. Prices of privacy coins moved by tens of percent within weeks in 2026. "Safety" really comes down to three things: the network's security record, how bugs get handled (both Zcash and Firo fixed flaws in 2026), and how you store the coins. Keep them in a wallet you control, with an offline backup. This isn't investment advice.
Is Bitcoin a privacy coin?
No. Bitcoin is pseudonymous. Every transaction and balance is public, and chain-analysis firms link addresses to identities. Optional tools like CoinJoin make tracing harder, but they don't hide amounts and are easy to spot. For default privacy you need a coin like Monero, or shielded Zcash. See Monero vs Bitcoin.
Can the government track cryptocurrency?
Transparent chains like Bitcoin and Ethereum, yes: routinely, using exchange records and chain analysis. Monero and shielded Zcash are much harder to trace on-chain. But authorities often identify people off-chain, through exchange KYC data, seized devices, IP logs or mistakes. Privacy coins protect what's on the ledger, not everything around it.
Are privacy coins legal?
Holding them is legal in most countries, including the US, the UK and the EU. Some jurisdictions restrict exchanges from listing them, and from July 10, 2027, the EU bars regulated providers from handling them. The rules target platforms, not individual holders. Check your local rules. More detail: is a no-KYC crypto exchange legal?
Will I still be able to hold Monero or Zcash in the EU after 2027?
Yes, under the rule as adopted. AMLR Article 79 applies to banks, financial institutions and crypto-asset service providers. It doesn't ban self-custody. What changes is access: EU-regulated platforms won't offer these coins, so non-custodial routes and your own wallet become the main options.
Is swapping BTC to Monero private?
Only from the swap onward. The Bitcoin you send stays traceable on its own chain. Once the XMR lands in your own Monero wallet, what you do with it is private by default. Avoid sending the same amount straight back to a KYC exchange, because matching amounts and timing can link the two sides.
Does Godex send ZEC to a shielded address?
No. Godex pays ZEC out to a transparent t… address. Shield the coins in your wallet right after they arrive. In wallets like Zodl it takes one tap. Full walkthrough: how to swap Zcash privately.
Do I pay tax on privacy coin swaps?
Often, yes. Many tax authorities treat a crypto-to-crypto swap as a disposal. Not needing an account doesn't change what you owe. See do no-KYC exchanges report to the IRS? and ask a tax professional where you live.
Is a Zcash ETF the same as owning ZEC?
No. ETF and ETP holders own fund shares through a broker account. They can't shield, send or spend ZEC. If you want what makes Zcash Zcash, you need the coins in your own wallet. For price context, see our Zcash price analysis.
