How Smart Contract Platforms Work
Each platform offers a virtual machine — Ethereum's EVM is the most widely adopted — that runs deterministic code submitted by developers. The same input always produces the same output, no matter who runs the node.
Transactions are bundled into blocks by validators, who are paid in the network's native token. Misbehaving validators can be slashed under proof-of-stake.
Once deployed, a smart contract is immutable unless its authors expose explicit upgrade paths. That immutability is the source of both trustlessness and risk: bugs are also permanent.
End users interact with contracts through wallets and dApp interfaces; under the hood, every click sends a signed transaction that pays gas in the host chain's token.

Avalanche (AVAX)
Avalanche runs three interoperable chains (X, P, C) plus permissioned subnets. AVAX pays for gas, secures the network and is burned with each transaction.
Its subnet architecture lets institutions launch app-specific chains with custom rules while still settling to a shared base layer.
Cardano (ADA)
Cardano takes a peer-reviewed, research-first approach. ADA is staked to delegators and used to pay fees on Plutus smart contracts.
Its phased rollout has been criticized as slow but has produced one of the most studied PoS designs in the industry.
Polkadot (DOT)
Polkadot connects independent parachains through a shared security relay. DOT bonds parachain slots, secures consensus and votes on governance.
Use Cases for Smart Contracts
Decentralized finance is still the largest category — lending, borrowing, trading and yield are all implemented as composable contracts.
NFT marketplaces use contracts to mint, transfer and royalty-route unique tokens, while on-chain games use them for items, achievements and game state.
