However, what they probably don\u2019t know is which is a safer bet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the following article, we\u2019ll address the investment case for both <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">altcoins <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and Bitcoin. By the end of it, you should have a decent understanding of which is more likely to make you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">money<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the rest of 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just don\u2019t take any of this as investment advice. Cryptocurrencies are notoriously volatile and even Bitcoin, the most stable of them, could theoretically lose all of its dollar <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">value <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in a short amount of time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what_are_altcoins\"><\/span><b>What are Altcoins?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before we talk about investing though, let\u2019s verify that you understand what is meant by an altcoin. When most folks in the cryptocurrency industry talk about <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">altcoins<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they mean any cryptocurrency that isn\u2019t Bitcoin. As the industry has exploded over the years, this has given rise to many different cryptocurrencies that strive to serve <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">different <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">purposes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"types_of_altcoins\"><\/span><b>Types of <\/b><b>Altcoins<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are now more than 6,000 digital currencies listed on sites like <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\u201dnofollow,noopener\u201d href=\"https:\/\/coinmarketcap.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CoinMarketCap<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Given that only Bitcoin is not considered an altcoin, there is a tremendous variety among the so-called alternative coins. We define some of the main distinctions between them below.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"coins_vs_tokens\"><\/span><b>Coins vs Tokens<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although all non-Bitcoin digital currencies are deemed <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">altcoins<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, some are technically not digital \u201ccoins\u201d at all. To be precise, no cryptocurrency is truly a \u201ccoin\u201d but that\u2019s the name given to a certain class of digital assets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we use the term \u201ccoin\u201d in relation to cryptocurrency, we specifically mean cryptocurrencies that are native to a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blockchain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Bitcoin was the first \u201ccryptocurrency coin\u201d but today there are many others that have their own network.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Litecoin;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monero;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ether (on the Ethereum network);\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zcash;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dash.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Distinct from these \u201ccryptocurrency coins\u201d are \u201ctokens\u201d. Tokens are cryptocurrencies that were issued on other networks. Tokens can be issued on any platform that allows for their creation. These include networks like Ethereum, NEO, Cardano, Tron, and others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"use_cases\"><\/span><b>Use Cases\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">different <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use cases for digital currencies these days. Bitcoin, for example, has carved a niche as a sort of <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\u201dnofollow,noopener\u201d href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/bitcoin-to-be-digital-gold-in-2020-says-bloomberg-report\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digital gold<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It has a fixed ultimate supply of 21 million units and many believe it will overtake the shiny precious metal as a planetary store of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">value <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other digital currencies attempt to solve some perceived problems with Bitcoin. The most common is the speed of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transfer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Bitcoin is focused on security \u2014 hence, it makes a good digital gold. The robust security also makes it rather slow and can mean that <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\u201dnofollow,noopener\u201d href=\"https:\/\/support.blockchain.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/360000939883-Explaining-bitcoin-transaction-fees\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transaction <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fees are high<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Cryptocurrencies focused on speed, such as Dash and Litecoin, compromise a little on this security model to enable quicker transactions for lower fees. This makes them fit for day-to-day spending.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another class of digital currencies is smart contract platforms. They allow for the creation of decentralized applications. These applications have a lot of promise to improve the digital processes we engage in on a daily basis. But, aside from the <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\u201dnofollow,noopener\u201d href=\"https:\/\/www.investingcube.com\/ethereum-ethusd-continues-to-benefit-from-the-defi-boom\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decentralized financial boom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the moment, they have delivered little so far. In the future, they could well be very important networks. Many of the tokens work within these decentralized applications, performing various roles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Privacy coins are the third class of digital currencies. Bitcoin, contrary to the belief of many, is not entirely private. Transactions made exist forever on the Bitcoin <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blockchain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Thanks to the likes of Chainalysis, it\u2019s possible to link some Bitcoin transactions with individuals. As the name suggests, privacy coins, like Monero or Zcash, have been designed to obscure any trace of identity of both a sender and a receiver. Although many analysts think greater privacy for cryptocurrency is necessary, many regulators around the world disagree. If any class of cryptocurrency was to be completely outlawed, it\u2019d probably be a privacy coin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"bitcoin_a_more_secure_bet\"><\/span><b>Bitcoin: A More <\/b><b>Secure <\/b><b>Bet?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin has stood the test of time for 11 years now. While <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">different altcoins <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have come and gone, Bitcoin has moved from strength to strength. Its rock-solid security has attracted many investors. This is because the network is strong, and it\u2019s the least likely of any cryptocurrency to suddenly have a change in rules that ruins its entire <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">value <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proposition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mining <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">provides this security and there is a larger <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">miner<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> network with Bitcoin than you\u2019ll find with any altcoin. Being the most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">secure <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">network, many people also feel Bitcoin is the safest investment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin\u2019s main <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">value <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proposition is its finite supply. There will only be 21 million <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\u201dnofollow,noopener\u201d href=\"https:\/\/godex.io\/coin\/btc\">Bitcoin<\/a> ever. The network functions almost as it did 11 years ago and this stability is one of its greatest assets. Just like gold is predictable as an asset, so is Bitcoin. It\u2019s this reason that the number of investors holding Bitcoin in their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wallet <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\u201dnofollow,noopener\u201d href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/close-to-11-million-btc-havent-moved-in-over-a-year\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for more than one year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> continues to grow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of investing in Bitcoin, most analysts agree that it will generate returns over the course of 2020. YouTuber MMCrypto, for example, believes that Bitcoin will <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\u201dnofollow,noopener\u201d href=\"https:\/\/beincrypto.com\/bitcoins-bright-future-adoption-hurdles-and-defi-picks-with-mmcryptos-chris\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">almost double<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from its <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">price <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">today of over $10,000 to hit its prior all-time high by the end of this year. Whilst 100% gains in less than half a year are insane by traditional investing standards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"investing_in_altcoins_high_risk_high_reward\"><\/span><b>Investing in <\/b><b>Altcoins<\/b><b>: High Risk, High Reward?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Altcoins<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in general, have a lot more room to grow than Bitcoin does. At fractions of the BTC market cap, more obscure projects can pump massively in a short amount of time. However, the problem is choosing which one will pump and when.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whereas Bitcoin faces little competition in the digital gold niche, almost every altcoin has one or more projects going after the same market. Take the smart contract platform, for example. Ethereum is the biggest today. But the likes of Cardano, EOS, Tron, and a host of others are all smart-contract ready and <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\u201dnofollow,noopener\u201d href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/cardano-introduces-proof-of-stake-with-shelley-hard-fork\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">working on improvements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that could steal Ethereum\u2019s thunder. One of these projects could well outperform Bitcoin over the rest of this year. Choosing which it will be is the hard part!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned earlier, this isn\u2019t supposed to be investment advice. If you were hoping to read this article and discover a list of must-buy coins, you\u2019d better look elsewhere. We make no claims to be able to read the future and anyone who does say \u201cX cryptocurrency will reach Y <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">price <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by Z date\u201d should be treated with massive suspicion. Ultimately, they don\u2019t know and are likely trying to engineer interest so that their own investments gain in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">value<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And there are plenty of profit-hungry buyers for them to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sell <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">invest <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in any cryptocurrency and particularly <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">altcoins<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, do so with extreme caution. Do research on the projects. Look at what they are setting out to accomplish and who is behind the crypto. Judge for yourself whether they have a decent chance of doing so and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">invest <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only a small amount in these long-shot plays. Also, be careful not to rush in, just because everyone is talking about a coin at a particular time. You\u2019ll probably get a better entry if you wait.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also important to remember that among <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">altcoins <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there are many overt <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scam<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> projects.
